What is Sedation Dentistry?

Going to the dentist can be a scary experience, especially if you are prone to nerves or anxiety. A Park Avenue oral surgeon aims to make the experience as painless and easy as possible, but some patients and surgeries will require something extra to make it through. Sedation dentistry uses sedatives, which are pharmacological agents designed to relax patients. Park Ave oral and dental surgeons use different types of sedatives, but each is designed to calm the central nervous system and focuses on areas relating to conscious awareness. The type of sedative used in sedation dentistry may depend on the degree of central nervous system depression necessary for the procedure, as well as the type of sedation oral surgeries being performed.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons look to increase patient comfort and relaxation, along with ease of the procedure through sedation. Oral surgeons use sedatives in varying levels during procedures. The minimal level keeps the patient awake. The moderate level will keep the patient conscious but the patient will not remember much of the procedure. Deep sedation means the patient can still be woken up, but is on the edge of being unconscious. General anesthesia will put the patient completely under.

There are also different types of sedation. Oral surgeries vary and there needs to be a procedure in place for each type. Inhaled minimum sedation requires the patient to breathe in nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, combined with oxygen. It is usually through a mask and the gas helps you relax. It can wear off quickly. Oral sedation is another type, which is taken through a pill like Halicon or Valium. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons will give you the pill prior to the surgery so it kicks in. The dosage will depend on the level of sedation a Park Avenue oral surgeon needs for the procedure. Sedation can also be given via an IV. This is beneficial if Park Ave oral and dental surgeons need to adjust the dosage being given. It works very quickly. Finally, deep sedation and general anesthesia will put you under almost immediately. You’ll be in a deep sleep for the entirety of the procedure and will only wake up once the medication wears off.

A Park Avenue oral surgeon needs a very particular training and licensing to be able to administer sedation dentistry. These methods of sedation require close monitoring and your surgeon will be able to do that while performing the procedure. If you require sedation oral surgeries, consult with expert oral and maxillofacial surgeons before undergoing any procedure.
